We were comissioned to redesign the lobby one of the most iconic and prominent hotels in Shanghai. Two twin towers are connected at the ground floor by the spatious entrance lobby. Although a generous space that serves many functions, it rather felt vast and empty. The initial idea was to break the spatial volume into more intimate and inviting zones tailored to fit human scale.

A contemporary hotel entrance lobby has to provoke a subtle yet memorable guest feeling and experience. It is composed by the sequence of spatial experiences that lead to one another. It’s not just a nicely designed and inviting piece of architecture, but rather a fully functional pedestrian hub that solves many current circulation problems within the hotel lobby. An inspiration comes from the Moon gate, a recognizable symbol of traditional Chinese culture.
